Too Important to Ignore
This book is rated five stars not because it is perfect. It is not. There are instances of flawed analysis, and a couple instances of embarrassing proof-reading accidents. However, the author's analysis of how debt everywhere - national governments, state governments, local governments, and personal- has grown like cancer for forty years, and now will control our financial future and that of our children and grandchildren, is an absolute must-read for every responsible adult. The list of chapter headings gives a flavor of what is to come: "Paper Promises"; "Riding the Gravy Train"; "Blowing Bubbles"; "The Ponzi Scheme Needed a New Set of Suckers", etc.Philip Coggan is former investment editor of the "Financial Times", and long-time columnist for the "Economist". He therefore has a nose and instinct for digging at the facts to get to the story, and the writing skill and experience to report the story in ways that the lay reader can follow. This is just as...

Product Description

For the past forty years western economies have splurged on debt. Now, as the reality dawns that many debts cannot be repaid, we find ourselves again in crisis. But the oncoming defaults have a time-worn place in our economic history. As with the crises in the 1930s and 1970s, governments will fall, currencies will lose their value, and new systems will emerge. Just as Britain set the terms of the international system in the nineteenth century, and America in the twentieth century, a new system will be set by today's creditors in China and the Middle East. In the process, rich will be pitted against poor, young against old, public sector workers against taxpayers and one country against another.

In Paper Promises, Economist columnist Philip Coggan helps us to understand the origins of this mess and how it will affect the new global economy by explaining how our attitudes towards debt have changed throughout history, and how they may be about to change again.

Excessive Debt or the Illusion of Wealth
Philip Coggan explores with much clarity the different cycles in which money and debt have expanded. Mr. Coggan reminds his audience that money is concomitantly a medium of exchange, a unit of account, and a store of value. Two of these monetary roles - the means of exchange and store of value - lie at the heart of the ongoing struggle between creditors and debtors.Starting in the United Kingdom in the late eighteenth century, the Industrial Revolution resulted into accelerated economic growth, significant population increase, and more trade across the developed world and its colonies. This burst of activity required more official money that remained based on precious metals until WWI. The United Kingdom led the way once again with the adoption of the gold standard among developed economies in the first half of the nineteenth century. The absence of universal suffrage allowed the upper or creditor classes to whom central bankers usually belonged, to favor a policy of...

Customer Review

**UPDATED**Would not consider anything other than Square Trade
****Update 04/11/12****As my initial review was written based on my experience with SquareTrade on items other than the Kindle Fire (which had not even been released at that time) I wanted to update with info relating specifically to the Fire warranty service.I have had to contact Square Trade because of an issue with one of my Kindle Fires and I mistakenly called the usual general warranty claim telephone number on the SquareTrade website. SquareTrade has a designated Kindle Fire specific warranty claim number which is listed on the warranty confirmation email customers receive after purchasing the Fire's warranty. It is 1-866-374-9939. Once I was connected to the right person (this was all in one phone call in less than five minutes) my issue was handled quickly, with no fuss, I did not have to provide any additional information and I had a replacement Kindle in less than 48 hours at no charge to me.Another reviewer had mentioned concern at the...

Exactly as advertised!!
Square trade warranties are exactly as advertised. After almost two years of abuse on my 2nd Generation Kindle, I finally broke the screen. I am a Soldier and my Kindle goes with me everywhere, Iraq and Afghanistan included. I called Amazon (from Afghanistan!) and was directed to the Kindle warranty department. In less than 5 minutes, I had a new kindle on the way to my house, and a shipping label to return my broken one at no charge. I was very impressed at how easy it was. I just purchased the Kindle fire and didn't hesitate for a second to get the additional warrantly offered by Square Trade. Keep up the great work.

Accurately Described (Mostly), But Beware Customer Service
As with all warranties, make sure that you read the fine print as soon as you get it. If you don't think it's worth it, cancel it. You can cancel this warranty in the first 90 days for a full refund (provided you haven't made any claims). You can also cancel any time after that and get a pro-rated refund based on how much time is left in your coverage period. This seems generous, so I'll give them kudos. It will cover your "oopsies"... but only the main ones: like if you drop it, step on it, or drop it in the pool/bathtub/sink/toilet. So that last one probably isn't common (I hope), but you get where I'm going with the dropping-in-water concept.Since you can't see much else besides what they write on this page, I'll highlight a few points that you might want to consider. If you read the fine print, you'll see that you're up a creek without a paddle if it's fried due to things like rain (or anything else that could be classified as "exposure to weather...
